LABOR SHORTAGE IN HOTEL FACILITIES ARE FELT BUT FEW ARE HIRING FOREIGNERS
The Youth Department of the National Federation of Ryokan and Hotel Owners’ Associations conducted a joint survey of lodging facilities and members of the National Federation of Ryokan and Hotel Owners’ Associations in order to gain an understanding of the current labor shortage in the lodging industry. This survey was conducted from May 15 to 26, 2023, and finally 318 valid responses were obtained.
[SURVEY SUMMARY]
1. 87% of facilities felt the effect of “National Travel Support” on tourism demand.
2. 76% of respondents answered that the number of reservations by foreigners visiting Japan has increased.
The country/region with the highest number of foreign visitors to Japan is Taiwan at approx. 30%.
3. 90% of facilities responded that they feel a shortage of labor.
4. 54% of the facilities have not “hired foreigners” since January 2023.
5. 28% of facilities responded that they would like to hire in order to secure human resources.
Only 46% of lodging facilities responded “Yes” to the question “Have you hired foreigners since January 2023?” This indicates that 54% of the facilities have not hired “foreigners” although they feel they are short of labor.
Regarding the “tokutei ginou” most of the facilities answered they are considering it to supplement the shortage of workers however 14% responded with still undecided.
