TOP GROSSING ANIME FROM JAPAN
Japan’s animation industry, renowned worldwide for its creativity and storytelling prowess, has consistently produced blockbuster anime movies that captivate audiences of all ages. One day, Tanjiro returns home to find his family slaughtered by demons, and his sister Nezuko turned into one.
Haunted by this traumatic event, Tanjiro embarks on a journey to become a demon slayer and avenge his family. He seeks out the Demon Slayer Corps, an organization dedicated to hunting demons and protecting humanity. Along the way, Tanjiro encounters various allies and adversaries, each with their own unique abilities and tragic backstories. Earning more than 40 billion yen in the box office, stealing the number 1 spot from Spirited Away by Studio Ghibli.
Next on the list us “Spirited Away,” former title holfer of Japan’s highest-grossing anime film. Released in 2001, the film weaves a tale about a young girl named Chihiro navigating a mysterious and magical world. Its enchanting narrative and breathtaking animation earned it the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature in 2003, cementing its place in cinematic history. They earned 30 billion in box office sales.
Other Ghibli masterpieces are “Howl’s Moving Castle” and “Ponyo” have also made significant contributions to Japan’s box office triumphs, showcasing the studio’s ability to create emotionally resonant stories that transcend cultural boundaries.
Last is “Your Name,” known as “Kimi no Na wa” in Japanese, is a critically acclaimed anime film directed by Makoto Shinkai. Released in 2016, the movie became a global phenomenon and received praise for its captivating story, beautiful animation, and emotional depth.
The story revolves around two high school students, Mitsuha Miyamizu, a girl living in the rural town of Itomori, and Taki Tachibana, a boy residing in Tokyo. Despite being strangers, they inexplicably begin to switch bodies, waking up in each other’s lives every few days. Confused and initially bewildered, Mitsuha and Taki communicate through notes and messages to navigate each other’s daily routines.
The stairs where Taki and Mitsuha met became a famous spot in Tokyo and easily became a tourist spot for anime lovers.
