SNOW FESTIVAL IN SAPPORO TO STARTS ON FEBRUARY 4

Ahead of the upcoming Sapporo Snow Festival scheduled to open on the 4th of the next month, the executive committee conducted a site inspection at Odori Park in Sapporo to assess the progress of snow sculpture construction.

Odori Park, located in Chuo Ward, Sapporo City and serving as the main venue for the festival, currently features over 120 snow sculptures. These include the impressive “Big Snow Sculpture,” standing over 10 meters tall, and smaller snow sculptures crafted by citizens selected through a lottery system. Construction is well underway.

On the 30th, members of the snow festival executive committee visited the snow sculpture-making site to inspect the ongoing work. Specifically, at the location where a significant snow sculpture depicting the theme of Sapporo Station’s former building, “Old Sapporo Station,” is being crafted, committee members engaged with Self-Defense Forces personnel responsible for the sculpture’s creation, ensuring the smooth progression of the work.

Despite recent higher temperatures making the snow prone to crumbling, the Self-Defense Force personnel assured the committee that they are proceeding cautiously and that the schedule for completion remains unaffected.

Expressing his sentiments, Toshiyuki Tabe, the Snow Sculpture Chairman of the executive committee, emphasized the importance of prioritizing safety and health in the process. He urged those involved in the snow sculpture creation to produce captivating works that will draw visitors from around the world.

The highly anticipated “Sapporo Snow Festival” is slated to take place from the 4th to the 11th of the next month.
