BLACK NAZARENE FESTIVAL’S TRASLACION RETURNS TO REGULAR SCALE AFTER FOUR YEARS
During the annual event at Quiapo Church, known as the Black Nazarene Festival, devotees participated in the Translacion procession from the Quirino Grandstand in Metro Manila to Quiapo Church. This marked the first time in four years that the event occurred on a regular scale.
It’s believed that touching the Christ statue can lead to miraculous outcomes, like healing from illness or receiving unexpected fortune. Devotees would attempt to reach the glass case by throwing towels or attempting to climb onto the trolleys. However, the City of Manila had banned climbing onto trolleys during the event. Additionally, there were individuals who fell ill and needed assistance from Red Cross staff, necessitating their transport on stretchers.
According to the National Police, 15,000 police and medical personnel have been deployed to the surrounding area to maintain safety and order. Police and fire officials closed off some high areas and pedestrian bridges to keep an eye on the area. During the tour, all mobile phone and other communication services in the surrounding area were cut off to maintain public order, and many people complained of “no signal” on their mobile phones.
