On May 8, JR East announced the upcoming release of the mobile Suica app “Welcome Suica Mobile” for foreign visitors to Japan, slated for spring 2025.

This app was developed to address common concerns among foreign travelers, such as difficulties in purchasing tickets, the desire to head to their destinations immediately after arrival, uncertainty about which rail pass to buy, and crowded ticket counters.

If you download the app to your iPhone and issue a Suica card in advance, you won’t need to go to a counter or ticket machine after entering the country. Even if you don’t have cash on hand, you can charge it with the credit card you set up in Apple Pay.
