INTERBANK SYSTEM FAILURE DUE TO CONCENTRATION OF PAYMENTS ON 5TH AND 10TH
The national bank’s data communication system (Zengin System), responsible for bank-to-bank remittances, experienced disruptions on the 5th and 10th, precisely during the peak times for payment settlements following holidays.
Several transactions may face delays of up to 10 days, potentially impacting both individual and business transactions.
The breakdown happened at the onset of intraday trading on the morning of the 10th. Specifically, the Zengin System, responsible for facilitating fund transfers between financial institutions (remittances), failed to initiate correctly at 11 financial institutions.
This system encompasses over 1,000 financial institutions, and it typically processes around 8.06 million transactions daily, totaling approximately 14 trillion yen. Up to this point, no less than 1.4 million transactions have experienced disruptions.
